If you've spent any time reading about marketing measurement recently, you've seen people argue about which approach is "best" — MMM, MTA, or incrementality testing. Most of those arguments generate more confusion than clarity, because the three methods don't actually compete with each other. They answer different questions, at different timescales, using different data.
The reason marketers get confused is that vendors selling one approach have an incentive to position it as a replacement for the others. It isn't. Understanding what each method does well, where it breaks down, and how they fit together is the single most valuable thing you can learn about marketing measurement. Multi-touch attribution (MTA): what it actually does
Multi-touch attribution tracks individual users across touchpoints and assigns fractional credit to each interaction along the path to conversion. A user might see a Meta ad, click a Google search result, open an email, and then buy. MTA models distribute credit for that conversion across those touchpoints based on rules (first-click, last-click, linear, time-decay) or algorithms (data-driven attribution).
What it's good at. MTA excels at in-flight tactical optimization. It can tell you which ad creatives, audiences, keywords, and landing pages are associated with conversions right now. Because it operates at the user level and updates in near-real-time, it's the right tool for daily and weekly campaign management decisions. If you need to decide which Meta ad set to scale this afternoon, MTA gives you a signal.
Where it breaks down. MTA has structural problems that no amount of algorithmic sophistication can fix.
It can only see what it can track. Every touchpoint that doesn't involve a trackable click — TV, podcasts, billboards, word-of-mouth, organic social, direct visits — is invisible. For brands spending across both online and offline channels, MTA is measuring a partial picture and presenting it as the whole thing.
Privacy changes are eroding its data foundation. Apple's ATT reduced Meta's ability to track iOS users. Third-party cookie deprecation (which keeps getting delayed but keeps getting closer) threatens web-based tracking. Consent regulations in Europe limit what data you can collect. Each of these individually degrades MTA accuracy. Together, they mean the user-level data that MTA depends on is getting worse every year, not better.
It double-counts. When a user interacts with multiple platforms before converting, each platform's attribution system claims credit for the sale. Your aggregate attributed revenue across all platforms will almost always exceed your actual revenue — often by 30-60% for brands running 3+ channels. MTA can tell you relative performance within a platform, but cross-platform totals are unreliable.
It's biased toward lower-funnel channels. Any attribution model based on click paths will overcredit channels where people click right before buying (branded search, retargeting, email) and undercredit channels that initiated the awareness (prospecting ads, brand campaigns, content). The click didn't cause the sale — the awareness did. MTA systematically gets this wrong.
Marketing mix modeling (MMM): what it actually does
MMM uses aggregate time-series data — weekly or monthly spend by channel alongside total sales — to estimate how much each channel contributed to business outcomes. It doesn't track individual users. Instead, it looks at patterns over time: when spend on Channel X went up, did sales go up? By how much? After accounting for seasonality, promotions, and other factors?
What it's good at. MMM captures the full picture. Because it works with aggregate data, it includes every channel — online and offline — and it's immune to tracking limitations and privacy changes. It naturally handles the overcounting problem because it works with actual total sales, not platform-reported conversions.
MMM is also the best tool for strategic budget allocation. It tells you which channels are producing the highest return at current spend levels, where you're hitting diminishing returns, and where you have room to scale. It's the tool you want for quarterly or annual budget planning.
Where it breaks down. MMM needs historical data. You can't run it on a channel you launched two weeks ago. It also needs spend variation — if you spent the same amount on Google every week, the model can't estimate Google's contribution. (For more on data requirements, see our data requirements guide.)
It's not real-time. The output reflects patterns in your historical data, not what's happening this week. You can't use MMM to decide which ad creative to pause today.
It's directional, not causal. MMM finds correlations between spend and outcomes and uses structural transformations (adstock, saturation curves) to make those correlations more meaningful. But it's still an observational model. If you launched a new product the same week you ramped Meta spend, the model might attribute the sales bump to Meta when it was really the product. The only way to prove causation is to run an experiment.
And it's sensitive to collinearity. If you always scale all your channels up and down together, the model can tell that "more total spend = more sales" but can't reliably split attribution between individual channels. It needs periods where channels moved independently to separate their effects.
Incrementality testing: what it actually does
Incrementality testing runs controlled experiments to measure the causal impact of a marketing channel or campaign. The most common formats are geo holdout tests (turn off ads in certain regions and compare sales to regions where ads continued) and conversion lift studies (platform-native experiments like Meta's conversion lift or Google's causal impact).
What it's good at. Incrementality testing is the only method that establishes causation. It answers the hardest question in marketing: "What would have happened if I hadn't spent this money?" The answer comes from a controlled experiment, not a model, so it's not subject to the statistical assumptions that MMM and MTA rely on.
When someone tells you a channel has a "true ROAS of 3.2x" and they ran a properly designed geo holdout to get that number, you can trust it in a way that no model-based estimate can match.
Where it breaks down. Incrementality tests are expensive and slow. A well-designed geo holdout requires you to turn off (or significantly reduce) spend in test regions for 4-8 weeks. During that period, you're sacrificing revenue in those regions. The opportunity cost is real, and for smaller brands, it can be prohibitive.
You can only test one or two things at a time. If you want to measure incrementality across six channels, that's six sequential tests, potentially spanning most of a year. And conditions change between tests, so the results from your January Meta test may not perfectly apply to your current August strategy.
Some channels are hard to test. You can't run a clean geo holdout on SEO or PR. National TV has limited ability to create clean holdout regions. Even with digital channels, spillover effects (people in "off" regions seeing ads through VPNs or travel) contaminate results.
Platform-native lift studies (Meta's conversion lift, for example) are easier to run but are inherently conflicted. Meta is measuring whether Meta ads work, using Meta's data and Meta's methodology. The results aren't necessarily wrong, but they aren't independent either.

How they fit together
The right framing isn't "which one should I use" — it's "which combination makes sense for my situation."
If you're a small team (1-3 marketers, under $50k/month in spend): Start with MMM for strategic direction and use platform-level reporting (not formal MTA) for tactical optimization. You probably don't have the budget or regional scale for meaningful incrementality tests. Run a free MMM through CheapMMM to get channel-level ROAS, then use those insights to guide your platform-level decisions.
If you're a mid-size team (4-10 marketers, $50k-$500k/month in spend): Use MMM for quarterly budget allocation. Use MTA or a third-party attribution tool for in-flight campaign management. Run one or two incrementality tests per year on your biggest channels — especially any channel where MMM and MTA disagree significantly. That disagreement is the best signal for where an experiment would be most valuable.
If you're a large team with dedicated data science (over $500k/month): Use all three. Run MMM monthly or quarterly as your strategic compass. Use MTA for daily optimization. Run a continuous program of incrementality tests and use those results to calibrate your MMM model. Bayesian MMM frameworks (Meridian, PyMC-Marketing) let you incorporate incrementality results as informative priors, which makes the model more accurate over time.
The most common mistake
The most common measurement mistake isn't choosing the wrong method. It's treating platform-reported ROAS as ground truth and never validating it with anything else.
If the only measurement you're using is what Meta and Google tell you about their own performance, you're making budget decisions based on self-reported grades. Every platform has an incentive to look good. That doesn't make their data useless — it makes it incomplete and biased.
Adding even a basic MMM layer gives you an independent check on those numbers. It won't be perfect, but it will show you where platform attribution is inflating results and where it's undervaluing channels. That's usually enough to identify your biggest reallocation opportunity.
Where to start
If you're not currently doing any measurement beyond platform dashboards, MMM is the highest-leverage first step. It covers all your channels, requires no tracking setup, and provides the broadest strategic view.
